Driving a friend or relative to Bristol Airport is no longer a matter of pulling up outside the terminal. Every kerb on the approach is now a Red Route, and the only place you can legally stop near the building is a paid car park. Here is exactly how it works, with the airport’s own published tariff.
The Drop Off & Pick Up Car Park
This is the express car park on the Transport Interchange, a short walk from the terminal. It is fully cashless and runs on automatic number plate recognition — cameras read your registration on the way in, and you pay at the barrier on the way out by contactless, Chip & PIN, Apple Pay or Google Pay. There is no credit-card surcharge. Note the 2.5 m height limit; anything taller needs the Minibus/Over Height car park.

Maximum stay is two hours. The jump between the 20–40 minute band and the 40–60 minute band is the one that stings — a flight that lands late can turn a £13 pick-up into a £30 one while you wait in the car.
The free hour: the Waiting Zone
The Waiting Zone is the airport’s free option for both drop-off and pick-up, giving up to one hour at no charge. It sits by the Car Rental Centre, away from the terminal, with a frequent shuttle bus running to and from the building. If you are collecting someone whose flight has not landed yet, this is where to wait rather than paying by the minute at the barrier — your passenger rides the shuttle out to you.
Blue Badge holders
Blue Badge holders get up to 40 minutes for £8.50 in the Drop Off & Pick Up Car Park. Drive to the exit barrier and scan the barcode on the reverse of the badge. Friends and family dropping off a Blue Badge holder can do the same by scanning the badge on exit. Every exit barrier has a help button staffed around the clock. Assistance itself is best booked in advance through your airline.
Red Routes — the expensive mistake
Stopping on the airport road network to let someone out is not a grey area. Red Routes and no-stopping areas are marked with signage and double red lines, and the site is monitored by camera. A vehicle that stops, unloads or parks outside a car park faces a £100 enforcement charge, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days. That is more than two hours in the express car park.
When being driven simply works out better
Add it up for a typical run: fuel down the A38, the gate price at the barrier, and a round trip for whoever is doing the driving — twice, if someone drops off and collects.
